Prostate Cancer Overview

One of the most common cancers occurring in men, with more than 200,000 new cases per year, prostate cancer typically has a slow growth rate while it is still confined to the prostate gland.  However, once out of the prostate, cancer can spread quickly and decrease the likelihood of effective treatment.  That is why it is crucial for men to receive regular prostate exams.  When prostate cancer is detected early, there is a much higher chance for successful treatment and recovery.

The prostate is a small gland in the male reproductive system that produces semen.  Most prostate cancers are detected before it has spread to other organs or tissues. Symptoms typically only occur when the cancer is advanced and treatment options are limited.

Prostate cancer screening with a prostate exam and blood test is recommended for men over 55 in general. Men with a higher risk for prostate cancer (African Americans, Family History) should begin screening at age 40.

While the following symptoms may be symptomatic of advanced prostate cancer, they may also indicate a different condition.  So, if you experience these symptoms, call your doctor.
